Environmental Effects on Glass Fiber Reinforced Polyester and Vinylester Composites

The effects of environment on glass fiber reinforced polyester and vinylester composites immersed in liquids and in humid air were investi gated. Tests were performed at temperatures 23 C and 93 C with the materials exposed to humid air at 50 and 100 percent relative humidities, and to five different liquids: saturated salt water, No. 2 diesel fuel, lubrica ting oil, antifreeze, and indolene. Changes in weight, ultimate tensile strength, tensile modulus, short beam shear strength, and shear modulus were measured over a six month period, and the effects of the environment on these parameters were assessed.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/66642/2/10.1177_002199838001400304.pd

Electrode Polarization Effects in Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy

    Get PDF
In the present work, we provide broadband dielectric spectra showing strong electrode polarization effects for various materials, belonging to very different material classes. This includes both ionic and electronic conductors as, e.g., salt solutions, ionic liquids, human blood, and colossal-dielectric-constant materials. These data are intended to provide a broad data base enabling a critical test of the validity of phenomenological and microscopic models for electrode polarization. In the present work, the results are analyzed using a simple phenomenological equivalent-circuit description, involving a distributed parallel RC circuit element for the modeling of the weakly conducting regions close to the electrodes. Excellent fits of the experimental data are achieved in this way, demonstrating the universal applicability of this approach. In the investigated ionically conducting materials, we find the universal appearance of a second dispersion region due to electrode polarization, which is only revealed if measuring down to sufficiently low frequencies. This indicates the presence of a second charge-transport process in ionic conductors with blocking electrodes.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, experimental data are provided in electronic form (see "Data Conservancy"

Measurement of the Bottom-Strange Meson Mixing Phase in the Full CDF Data Set

    Get PDF
We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase \beta_s using the time evolution of B0_s -> J/\psi (->\mu+\mu-) \phi (-> K+ K-) decays in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of \beta_s and the B0_s decay-width difference \Delta\Gamma_s, and measure \beta_s in [-\pi/2, -1.51] U [-0.06, 0.30] U [1.26, \pi/2] at the 68% confidence level, in agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model value of \beta_s, we also determine \Delta\Gamma_s = 0.068 +- 0.026 (stat) +- 0.009 (syst) ps-1 and the mean B0_s lifetime, \tau_s = 1.528 +- 0.019 (stat) +- 0.009 (syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by other experiments.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, Phys. Mitigating risk of exceeding environmental limits requires ambitious food system interventions

    Get PDF
Transforming the global food system is necessary to avoid exceeding planetary boundaries. A robust evidence base is crucial to assess the scale and combination of interventions required for a sustainable transformation. We developed a risk assessment framework, underpinned by a meta-regression of 60 global food system modeling studies, to quantify the potential of individual and combined interventions to mitigate the risk of exceeding the boundaries for land-system change, freshwater use, climate change, and biogeochemical flows by 2050. Limiting the risk of exceedance across four key planetary boundaries requires a high but plausible level of ambition in all demand-side (diet, population, waste) and most supply-side interventions. Attaining the required level of ambition for all interventions relies on embracing synergistic actions across the food system

Moisture Absorption of Polyester-E Glass Composites

Moisture absorption of polyester-E glass composites immersed in liquids and in humid air were investigated. The weights of the composites as a function of exposure time and temperature were measured for three differ ent types of materials. Tests were performed a) with the materials im mersed in distilled water, in saturated salt water, in No. 2 diesel fuel, in jet A fuel, in synthetic aviation lubricant, in gasoline, and b) with the materi als exposed to humid air. The apparent maximum moisture contents and the apparent diffusivities were deduced from the data.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/67432/2/10.1177_002199838001400206.pd
